HENRIK VIBSKOV, NECK PLUS ULTRA, ART MOVES #3
25 May – 8 Sep. 2013
GL STRAND presents the first major solo exhibition in Denmark by artist, musician, and designer Henrik Vibskov. Henrik Vibskov works in a unique inter-aesthetical field that cuts across design, music, performance, stage- and installation art. Rapidly he has achieved international recognition for his innovative multimedia art experiments, and his spectacular fashion collections, and -shows.
In GL STRAND’s exhibition Vibskov unfolds his creative excess when he transforms the gallery’s entire first and second floor into one vast installation. NECK PLUS ULTRA will be a comprehensive gesamtkunstwerk dissolving the traditional boundaries between art genres: music, sculpture, design, and film are thus incorporated on equal footing with imagery, photography, fashion, set design and audio.
The title NECK PLUS ULTRA is a pun on the Latin nec plus ultra, "nothing farther beyond" - an expression which, according to Greek mythology was engraved on the pillars standing at the end of the known World. Concomitantly 'neck' refers to the anatomical link between head and body - and precisely necks and heads from birds, comprise a surprising and essential part of the exhibition.
The audience may look forward to an imaginative and precisely choreographed installation, in which Henrik Vibskov, with tunnels and tents, bird’s legs and knitted sculptures, udfolds the exhibition's overall narrative: the exploration of rituals and transitions as well as our attempts to make sense of complex structures.
Vibskov has received numerous awards for his work, including the Söderberg Prize, widely considered to be the world's largest design prize. He has exhibited extensively in art galleries and institutions including shows at PS1 - MoMA in New York, Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the ICA in London and Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin in Paris in collaboration with artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset.
The exhibition is a collaboration between Henrik Vibskov, Kunstforeningen GL STRAND and Galerie des Galeries in Paris, where NECK PLUS ULTRA was featured from February 27th to May 4th 2013.
Art works and installations presented in Paris were produced with the support of the Galeries Lafayette.
The Galerie des Galeries, the Galeries Lafayette Haussmann’s cultural space, is situated at the 1st floor of the central store of Galeries Lafayette Haussmann. The gallery’s exhibition program, organized around four shows per year dedicated to French and international work in various creative fields, looks to emphasize the ability to reach across categories that exist between fashion, the fine arts, and design, disciplines that have always inspired Galeries Lafayette.
NECK PLUS ULTRA is the third exhibition in the ART MOVES exhibition series presented in collaboration with the Nordea-foundation.
Kunstforeningen GL STRAND is glad to present NECK PLUS ULTRA in partnership with Galerie des Galeries.
KASPAR BONNÉN: The Past Will Never Leave You
25 May – 1 SEPTEMBER 2013
As the exhibition title implies, we live with our memories of our upbringing and many people even try to reconstruct the secure conditions of childhood. But what memories are created by a home where Mother was schizophrenic? And how have the various spatialities of childhood affected the memory of one’s upbringing? These questions are raised in this ambitious exhibition by the visual artist Kaspar Bonnén. Through a staging of his childhood home built up of open constructions and sensory materials Bonnén grapples with this complex entity, memory, and offers new spatial experiences.
The installation can be called a memory theatre andconsists of a series of rooms in the GL STRAND exhibition space on the 3rd floor, based on the ground plan of the apartment where he lived as a child with his sister and a mentally ill mother. Bonnén has reinterpreted some of the rooms in order to explore a variety of spatialities – mental, emotional and actual spaces. Through displacements in the architectural structures, the incorporation of personal objects from his mother’s home and text-based works, the staging expresses various moods and emotions that Bonnén associates with his upbringing and childhood home. Experiences that he has written about earlier in the book Skabelser (Creations) from 2010, which forms the background for the exhibition,
Kaspar Bonnén (b. 1968) graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1999. He works across media such as text, performance, sculpture, painting, photography and video art. Since the start Bonnén has been interested in space as a locus of experience or a metaphor for emotions. Kaspar Bonnén is represented in major collections including the Danish National Gallery, and some of his public decorations can be seen at the Opera on Holmen and the Crown Prince’s mansion at Amalienborg Palace.
